Understanding Liberia’s Senate: Role, Makeup, and the Call for True Independence

Know your Senate

1. Know your Senators role: decide matters of national interest; represent the interests of people in their counties; propose debates & vote on bills & amendments; examine issues in committees; possess exclusive constitutional power to scrutinize & closely examine the executive branch; and along with the House, must approve any treaties, loans or other international agreements before the president signs.

2. Know the makeup: below is the current makeup of the Liberian Senate. Source: Wikipedia, Interparliamentary Union.

Note:

a) Defunct CPP has 5 members (2 LP, 1 UP, and 1 ANC) all of them now part of the UP Alliance, CDC has 9 and there are 10 Independents. Unfortunately, most of the Independents have traded their independence for proximity and aligned with the political parties whose candidates they defeated

b) This structure may need a slight update.

Just imagine the transformative effect if we had true independents in the Senate. Get to know your government. It positions you to hold it accountable.

I am among the independents!
