Saluting a Patriot: The Courageous Leadership of General Prince Charles Johnson III

An officer and a gentleman. He put his country first at a crucial moment when he refused to bow to pressure to get the army involved in the just-ended elections. Not many Liberians are aware of how close we came to that.

Is he a victim of bad advice to the Commander-in-Chief or political machinations to settle old scores because of his valor? We may never know. But what we know is that this young General is a patriot and a leader. He walked away from a lucrative ministerial job, again, to save his country from spiraling into potential chaos. As Nelson Mandela said, walking away is leadership, too.

We’ve retired three young generals including the only female among them in 6 years. Bad for a young army in a post-conflict country.

Thank you, General! May God bless you.
