Reflections on Ramadan and a Historic Vote: Senator’s Emotional Journey Towards Establishing War & Economic Crimes Courts in Liberia

It’s the last night of the 2024 Ramadan. I thank the Almighty for good health and for guiding me through the 30-day religious odyssey. I pray that HE accepts my fast, forgives my mistakes and sins and those of other faithful Muslims, and blesses my country.

Today is an emotional day for me, and hopefully, the Liberian Senate, for we will debate and vote on record for the Resolution to establish the War & Economic Crimes Courts (WECC) for Liberia, which I signed yesterday ahead of today’s debate. As I signed the Resolution, I put on a joyous facade in front of my colleagues to mask the deep emotions that filled me. For some of us, the WECC is not politics. They killed my father, my three brothers, my uncles, and my aunts, and massacred about half of my village. This is an initial victory for them and the other nearly 250,000 Liberians they also murdered. I hope President Boakai leads the nation with great courage through this process. We will stand with him if he does. There is no turning back now!

As a country, we have a rendezvous with destiny. Share your story! God bless Liberia!
