Rising from the Ashes: A Call for Unity and Accountability in Liberia’s Leadership Crisis

Today marks a sad day in our nation’s history. Our Capitol, one of the enduring symbols of our democracy that survived the war relatively unscathed, now faces an unprecedented challenge, with fire gutting its structure on the heels of a leadership crisis in the House of Representatives marred by violence, vandalism, and a violent protest just yesterday. We condemn the excessive force of the Liberia National Police in yesterday’s demonstration.

The National Fire Service, despite being underfunded by the very legislature it serves, has rallied alongside Sethi Brothers Fire Service and other brave firefighters, working tirelessly to combat the blaze. Though the damage is significant and costly, we can take heart in the fact that there have been no injuries thus far, and I pray this continues. We thank the LNFS and other firefighters.

In the wake of this disaster and while the cause of today’s fire remains unknown, House and Senate leadership must act decisively to initiate a thorough and independent investigation. We owe it to the Liberian people to uncover the truth, ensure accountability for any wrongdoing, and restore their faith in the rule of law, even as we navigate its current challenges in our governance architecture.

Today’s events serve as a clarion call for unity and healing amidst the leadership crisis. We cannot afford to lose more invaluable time or add to the financial burdens that weigh heavily upon us. The Liberian people deserve a legislature committed to building upon over 21 years of peace, not dismantling it. Let us set aside our differences and personal agendas to reclaim the public’s trust in our institutions. If we do not, we must reflect seriously on our roles within this governance structure.

I remain optimistic that my colleagues will embrace the opportunity to rebuild this institution, both physically and metaphorically, and fulfill its mandate with excellence. Together, we can and will rise to meet this challenge in service to the people.

May God bless our country!
